The AI Era Needs More Than Compute. It Needs Smarter Interconnection

The AI race is often measured in compute.

More GPUs. Larger models. Faster processing.

But there is another critical layer that could determine how effectively AI performs in the real world: interconnection.

Consider a simple example.

Imagine an AI-powered customer service assistant for a large e-commerce platform during a major festival sale. A customer asks, “Where is my order?”

To answer that question instantly, the AI may need to access multiple systems at once—order databases, inventory platforms, logistics providers and, in some cases, payment or authentication systems.

The AI model may be incredibly powerful. But its ability to deliver a fast and accurate response depends on something beyond the model itself: how quickly and reliably all these systems can communicate.

If data has to travel through multiple networks, take inefficient routes or depend on fragmented connectivity, the experience suffers. Latency increases. Performance drops. And the value of the underlying compute can be compromised.

AI is only as effective as the infrastructure connecting its data.

This becomes even more important as AI workloads become increasingly distributed across clouds, enterprises, data centres and edge locations.

The future of AI will not be built around isolated infrastructure. It will depend on ecosystems that can exchange data securely, efficiently and in real time.

That is where interconnection becomes strategic infrastructure.

By enabling networks, cloud providers, content platforms, enterprises and data centres to connect directly, interconnection can help reduce latency, improve network efficiency and provide greater resilience.

For AI applications, where real-time performance increasingly matters, these advantages can make a meaningful difference.

At DE-CIX India, we see this as an important part of India’s AI infrastructure story. Building more compute capacity is essential—but connecting that compute intelligently is equally important.

As India accelerates its investments in AI, data centres and cloud infrastructure, the next competitive advantage may not simply be how much compute we have.

It may be how intelligently we connect the ecosystems that power it.

Because in the AI era, compute creates capability. Interconnection turns that capability into performance.
